We are pleased to announce that Atelier CHUZI will take part in The Symphony of Bamboo & Wind, an exhibition held at the Hirado Dutch Trading Post in Nagasaki, Japan, from 26 September to 25 October 2026.
Bringing together creators from Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Netherlands, the exhibition explores bamboo and wind through craft, design, and cultural exchange. Set in Hirado—a place shaped by centuries of maritime encounters—the exhibition looks at how materials, techniques, and cultures travel, meet, and gradually form new relationships.
For the exhibition, Atelier CHUZI presents Memory of Home, a continuing series of suspended bamboo works developed from the structural logic of traditional bamboo weaving.
Beginning with bamboo strips, the work transforms them into individual structural units that connect through joints, gravity, and balance. Once suspended, the originally planar structures naturally unfold into three-dimensional forms, moving gently with the surrounding air and light.
In Hirado, the work continues to evolve through the introduction of freshly prepared local madake bamboo, combined with the existing Taiwanese Makino bamboo used in the series. As the fresh green bamboo gradually dries and shifts toward warmer tones over time, the relationship between the two materials changes with it.
Much like the historical connections between Taiwan and Hirado that have developed since the time of Koxinga, a new relationship and balance gradually emerges through shared time.
On the opening day, Atelier CHUZI will also host a bamboo craft workshop in Hirado.
